The focus may be on the Champions League glamour ties, or even the bigger names in the Europa League like Manchester United, Roma and Ajax, but elsewhere in the competition there are betting opportunities ripe for the taking.
To celebrate the first round of group matches in Uefa’s often slighted, but thoroughly entertaining competition, we’ve plumped for a fourfold of away wins that pays out at a meaty 21/1:
Astra may have sent Slaven Bilic’s West Ham packing for the second straight season in the qualification round, but that 1-0 win at the London Stadium is one of just two victories in their last 11 games.
Meanwhile, Vienna have gone unbeaten in five, with four wins in that time including two over Rosenborg in the previous round of this tournament.
Tel Aviv have made a strong start to the season, winning two of their first three league games and drawing the other. Having come through all four qualifying rounds to take their place in Group D, they are formidable opponents.
Not quite as formidable as Zenit though, who last season reached the last 16 of the Champions League and did so by topping their mini league. They’ve also made an unbeaten start to the league campaign and have conceded just three goals in six games.
After failing to get through the Champions League early stages, Olympiakos navigated the Europa League’s play-off round with a comfortable 3-1 aggregate win over Arouca.
They begin their group phase with a trip to Switzerland, where they will play a Young Boys outfit that flamed out in their own quest for the Champions League with a 9-1 aggregate loss to Borussia Monchengladbach.
The Ukrainians have been Champions League regulars for each of the past six seasons, yet are surprisingly in the middle of the outright pack at 25/1 in the Europa League winners betting.
A statement against Turkish side Konyaspor may well change that and considering the hosts have never played in European competition, that looks quite likely.
