Championship strugglers Watford travel to League Two Bristol Rovers tonight for the pair’s re-arranged Carling Cup first-round tie.
The initial fixture was called off due to rioting in Bristol and this time around there is every chance that it could be Rovers who run off with the loot.
These days the Carling Cup musters the same sort of enthusiasm among bigger teams as a weekend away at the mother-in-law’s.
The rewards for the endeavours are pretty fruitless, so Championship sides have taken to sticking out scratch sides of promising kids and squad players in need of an early-season game.
Of the first-round ties which have already taken place, no fewer than seven second-tier outfits have been knocked out by lower league opposition and Rovers are well-priced in bwin’s 3Way football betting market at 39/20 to add to those scalps.
Even if you don’t fancy Rovers to return you money, there are decent gains to be made whichever way you call it. The largest price available is the draw in normal time at 12/5, with Watford rated at 13/10 to progress without the need for an extra 30 minutes.
The visiting Hornets have been in poor form so far this season, chalking up just two draws and scoring only two goals.
They haven’t notched in their last three outings, with Saturday’s goalless draw at Coventry proving so limp that even the little blue pills peddled by Pele could sort them out.
Considering it’s been getting on for five hours since they last found the net, bwin’s number of goals market has Watford at a fairly lengthy 27/10 to fire another blank and a generous 17/10 for them to manage to strike just once.
Similarly, if you do fancy the Pirates to sail away into the distance of the second round, betting on them to score once (31/20) or twice (3/1) could significantly boost your treasure chest.
