It is perhaps a testament to the power of money that Premier League founder members Crystal Palace and a team from the relative footballing backwater of Crawley could feasibly be playing in the same division next season.
Crawley romped to the Conference title last season and are currently leading League Two, while the Eagles flirted dangerously with relegation to League One, although are making a better fist of life in the Championship this time around.
Even allowing for Palace’s encouraging start, Crawley are just 13/5 to win at Selhurst Park this evening in a rearranged Carling Cup first round fixture, with the Red Devils’ upwardly-mobile status perhaps leading to a shorter than expected price for a League Two side away to a team two divisions above them.
For their part, Palace are 23/20 to win in 90 minutes, with the draw at 21/20, but perhaps a punt on the Londoners is worth a look.
The Eagles have made a solid start to the season – after losing their first match they have won their last three, with Saturday’s victory at Hull their first away win for ten months.
So Dougie Freedman’s side will be full of confidence and if they get an early goal the 12/5 on offer for them to be winning at half time and full time might just be a steal.
Speaking of goals, there should be a few in south London, with Crawley having scored three goals in three of their five matches this season.
It is of course difficult to know how serious both managers will take the early stages of this competition, but given their respective excellent starts to their league campaigns, both will want to maintain their momentum with a victory, so a bet on over 3.5 goals at 11/5 looks to hold some value.
Similarly if you are looking for a bet for your loose change, then stick it on Palace to win 3-1 on offer at a tempting 14/1.
