After my last match preview turned out to be a successful 8/1 tip when Newcastle drew 0-0 with Maritimo in the Europa League, I am approaching this Capital One Cup tie with my tail up and my head in the clouds.
Queens Park Rangers play Reading in an all Premier League tie on Wednesday and it is the home side who will start as favourites in the bwin 3-way market. Rangers are 83/100 to win the match in 90 minutes, with the draw at 5/2 and Reading quoted at 3/1.
If results on Tuesday are anything to go by, the wise money would not be on QPR after the likes of Manchester City and Everton failed to progress when favourites to do so. Both these sides have started poorly in the league this season and their only wins so far have come in this competition, when QPR beat Walsall 3-0 and Reading scraped past Peterborough 3-2 at home.
Reading’s only Premier League point came on the opening day of the season and since then they have lost all three of their matches, shipping eight goals. Their performance at Chelsea was encouraging before going down 4-2 but a 3-1 home defeat at Spurs and 1-0 defeat at West Brom has set alarm bells ringing at this early stage.
QPR have hardly made a flying start to the season either, picking up just two points in five games and it has to be said that getting thumped 5-0 at home to Swansea on the opening day of the season hardly set the tone for a first class season. Their other match at Loftus Road was a creditable 0-0 draw with Chelsea but even at this early stage, goals look to be an issue having found the onion bag just three times so far in their opening league fixtures.
With goals hard to come by for both these sides, under 2.5 goals is a consideration at 19/20 and both teams not to score is 21/20. Although the Capital One Cup is not normally shy of goals, these two teams could look to cancel themselves out in the early stages and the bet could be to back the half-time result to be 0-0 at 2/1, which would see your free £20 bet from Bwin turn into £60.
Looking a bit further afield in the betting, Shaun Wright-Phillips got his first goal for QPR earlier this season and if he gets a start tonight he looks a decent bet to score in the match at 5/2. His attacking threat and pace will cause Reading’s leaky defence all kind of problems and a goal from him could see your free £20 win you £70.
Recommended bet: 0-0 at half-time
