Early Championship pace-setters Ipswich Town look good bets to continue their winning start to the season against Northampton Town in the Carling Cup tomorrow.
The Tractor Boys got their domestic campaign up and running in impressive fashion on Saturday, beating Bristol City 3-0 at Ashton Gate.
This took them to the top of the early Championship table, although their next task will be to see off opponents two divisions below them in the Carling Cup.
League Two’s Northampton got their season underway with a 0-0 draw against Accrington Stanley at the weekend, although bwin’s 3Way football betting market suggests they have their work cut out to get anything out of tomorrow’s fixture.
Ipswich are 9/20 to beat Northampton at Portman Road and 29/100 to progress to the next round.
This leaves the Cobblers 19/4 underdogs to claim victory, with a draw priced at 3/1 and Northampton to advance to round two available at 9/4.
While Jewell urged supporters and players alike not to get carried away with Saturday’s result, he expressed his satisfaction with his team’s showing, particularly in keeping a clean sheet away from home.
Given their encouraging performance, Ipswich’s status as favourites is well-deserved.
However, Jewell’s admission that he will not be playing a full-strength team tomorrow suggests Northampton should not be automatically discounted.
Despite suggesting that their next opponents “won’t be easy” to see off, Jewell said the game represents “an opportunity to give players who haven’t played a lot of football a competitive game against a team which will be desperate to come to Portman Road to get a result”.
With this in mind, a draw or Northampton win could be worth a punt in the double-chance market at odds of 29/20.
A successful £25 free bet on Northampton to win or draw against Ipswich, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £61.25.
It’s also worth considering that Northampton knocked Liverpool out of the Carling Cup last season, demonstrating they are capable of an upset.
That said, Ipswich went on to end the Cobblers’ run with a 3-1 victory at Portman Road in the fourth round.
And with the gulf in class having been illustrated so recently, it seems Ipswich are still the best bets.
As such, football betting fans may find the best returns can be secured by betting on there being more than 2.5 goals in the game – as there were last season – at odds of 3/4.
