Two teams in contrasting form meet at the Cardiff City Stadium this evening in what promises to be an emotionally-charged match.
Wales’ last international before the tragic death of Gary Speed was played at the venue, with the former Dragons boss cementing his reputation as a young manager of great promise by leading his side to a 4-1 win over Norway.
Speed is sure to be honoured by the crowd this evening before, if at all possible, attention is turned to the Carling Cup tie between Cardiff and Blackburn.
Despite playing in the division below Blackburn, Championship side Cardiff are favourites to win the match in normal time in bwin’s 3Way football market.
The Bluebirds are priced at 5/4 for a routine victory over 90 minutes and 7/10 to make it through on the night.
This leaves Blackburn as 2/1 outsiders to win in 90 minutes, with a draw available at 12/5.
Meanwhile, Rovers are priced at 51/50 to make it through to the last four.
Cardiff look to be the best bets to progress given their fine recent form.
Malky Mackay’s team have not lost since a 4-3 defeat away to Peterborough on 18th October, with six wins secured in their subsequent eight fixtures.
They also have the second-best home record in the Championship with six wins from nine matches and have scored an average of three goals a game at the Cardiff City Stadium.
This form has seen Mackay’s side rise to third in the table, which is just three places below Blackburn in the English league ladder.
Rovers are struggling, propping up the Premier League table with just a single win recorded so far this season.
Away from Ewood Park, their record of four draws and three losses from seven matches hardly inspires confidence, and although their most notable success this season has come in the Carling Cup – a 4-3 extra time win over Newcastle – they look vulnerable.
For improved odds, a bet on a draw/Cardiff win in the half time/full time market looks a good one at 19/4.
The scores have been level at half time in six of Cardiff’s nine league matches at home this season, while the average time of the Bluebirds’ first home goal is 48 minutes.
And with Cardiff far more likely to score in the second half than they are in the first – 64 per cent of their goals have come after the interval – the stats point towards a draw at half time with the home side moving ahead after the break.
A successful £25 free bet on a draw/Cardiff win at half time/full time would return £143.75, with the free bet available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account.
One final bet to consider on the basis of Cardiff’s second half strength is for the home team to win the second half at odds of 31/20.
Crucially, this bet is also supported by the fact that Blackburn are more prone to conceding after the interval than they are in the first 45 minutes.
