With the new domestic season finally upon us, punters will be looking to get their fix of goals and the Capital One Cup first-round ties between Leeds United and Shrewsbury Town, Watford and Wycombe Wanderers, and Notts County and Bradford City could all produce three or more.
Existing bwin customers (or new ones using their free £20 bet when signing up, for that matter) can back the ‘Over 2.5 goals’ selections in these matches to make up a treble which could deliver a solid return at just over 7/2.
Read on to see why we’re convinced the nets will be bulging with regularity at Elland Road, Vicarage Road and Adams Park on Saturday afternoon.
Over 2.5 goals in Leeds v Shrewsbury @ 3/5
Elland Road was the place to go for guaranteed goals in the Championship last season and there is no reason to suggest that this campaign will be any different for Leeds United, starting with their Capital One Cup tie against League Two Shrewsbury.
Leeds fans saw 75 goals at their ground last term at an average of 3.26 a league match, which meant a well-above-average 57% of their games produced over 2.5 goals. And with manager Neil Warnock promising to field his strongest side on Saturday, Whites fans could be in for more of the same against a Shrews team that averaged 2.52 goals on their travels last season as they won automatic promotion from League Two.
Over 2.5 goals in Watford v Wycombe @ 67/100
The Gianfranco Zola era gets underway at Watford when Wycombe Wanderers visit Vicarage Road in the Capital One Cup on Saturday and it is a match that promises goals.
Zola has been busy in the transfer market, making the most of the new ownership at Watford to bring in a number of players, many on loan deals from his native Italy. It remains to be seen how it will all pan out, but with an unsettled look to the side, there could be goals at both ends in the early weeks. After all, it was the same story last season: fixtures involving the Hornets averaged 2.61 goals, with that figure creeping up to 2.83 (57% of games were overs) when playing at home.
Visitors Wycombe, meanwhile, were the goal kings of League One last season, as their 46 league games produced 153 goals – more than any other side – at an average of 3.11. Away from home, Gary Waddock’s men averaged 3.39 goals per match, with 61% of their games featuring over 2.5 goals. With such statistics taken into account, this fixture represents something of a no-brainer for our treble.
Over 2.5 goals in Notts County v Bradford City @ 3/4
Not far behind Wycombe in the goal stakes in League One last season were Notts County, whose home match against Bradford City is another that could end up with a few goals.
There were 138 goals in County’s 46 league games during the 2011/12 campaign, the fifth highest total in the division, which worked out at an average of exactly three goals a game. Only Yeovil (30) featured in more games that produced three goals, as a massive 61% of the Magpies’ fixtures (28) met this criterion.
Similarly, only three grounds saw more goals than the 71 Meadow Lane witnessed and with manager Keith Curle adding another goalscorer to the ranks in Carlisle’s Francois Zoko, there is the chance for even more this season.
Saturday against Bradford could well be the starting point. The Bantams struggled last year at the bottom end of League Two and in spite of a raft of new signings look there for the taking for a County side who were the fifth most prolific team in League One last season in front of their home fans.
