Bristol City go into tonight’s previously-cancelled tie favourites to progress in the cup against near-neighbours Swindon Town.
The Championship side are 4/5 on to get the win as they look to build momentum following a goalless draw with Portsmouth and a shock 2-1 win away to much-fancied Leicester.
In-demand striker Nicky Maynard, who has scored three goals in four games so far this season, could prove too hot to handle for their League One opposition and going for a home win tonight really does make sense.
It is worth bearing in mind that with the close of the transfer window drawing nearer and nearer, Maynard is very much in the shop window, with Championship favourites West Ham the latest club to confirm their interest in the 24 year old.
The striker will therefore be motivated to put in a good performance.
It is now three league defeats in a row for Swindon and Paolo Di Canio’s honeymoon period is well and truly over. Relegated to the fourth tier of English football last season, for the Robins it was very much a new league, new manager, new start.
What a start it was – Di Canio watched a convincing 3-0 opening day win at home to Crewe but the charismatic Italian will have to work some magic tonight if his side are to progress in the cup.
They are 7/2 to cause an upset in 90 minutes but it would take some doing.
There is always the risk of underestimating your lower league opponents but with an experienced head in the dressing room like David James, Bristol City seem unlikely to make that mistake.
If you fancy Swindon to raise their game and go against form you might like the look of 25/4 for the match to be 1-1 at the end of ninety minutes.
But taking it to extra-time would be a result in itself given Swindon’s current struggles and you can expect their losing streak to continue tonight.
