Look away now Liverpool fans, because two of your former goal-getters extraordinaire are set to face off when Barcelona and Atletico Madrid meet for the second time in ten days at Los Blaugrana’s Camp Nou headquarters.
Both Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres are likely to start this Copa del Rey last-16 first-leg clash, based on their respective coaches’ recent selection policies, with the latter striker bouncing after bagging a brace in the previous round away to Real Madrid.
However, those were his first goals in 11 appearances, eight of which were starts, and Torres has blanked in three of his four Atleti games since landing on loan from Milan at the start of this month, including last time out at home to Granada.
Suarez, on the other hand, has five in his past ten all-competition outings with Barca, after failing to fire in any of his first five games for the feted La Liga outfit.
The Uruguayan clearly rates the value pick of the former Reds pair at evens to score at any time, even with Torres back at 9/4 in the same market.
Three of Suarez’s five Barca goals have come before the break, with one opening the scoring within half an hour of Luis Enrique’s charges’ 4-0 Champions League win at APOEL Nicosia, so 13/4 about the 27-year-old firing first holds some appeal.
Saying that, there are a few more likely candidates in this clash, none more so than Neymar, who has notched three in his last three games, opening the scoring twice during that time.
At 11/4, Brazil’s talisman just about ranks as a better option for first goal than Lionel Messi, who’s the best part of a point shorter at 19/10 after opening the scoring and grabbing two more in Enrique’s side’s 4-0 battering of Deportivo in Galicia last time out.
For Diego Simeone’s visitors, Mario Mandzukic looks a big price at 8/1 in this market, as the former FC Bayern Munchen man bagged first in the 2-0 win over Granada and scored his team’s only goal at Camp Nou recently. Both strikes were from the penalty spot.
