The Champions League was back with a bang last night and eight fixtures brought a whopping 28 goals in total. Expect more fireworks on Wednesday evening as the race for qualification for the last 16 hots up and there are three in-form strikers who stand out as great anytime goalscorer bets.
Using the free £25 bet new customers receive for joining bwin.com on Arsenal’s Robin van Persie, Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Porto hitman Hulk could offer an impressive return of £178.50. And here’s why the treble is worth backing.
Van Persie to score against Dortmund @ 3/4
Probably the most obvious component of this treble is Van Persie, whose recent feats need no introduction. His goalscoring record in the last 33 games is better than one per game, a quite remarkable record for a player deprived of the world-class midfield supply line he has been used to following the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, plus the injury to Jack Wilshere. It is no exaggeration to say Van Persie is central to everything Arsenal do and their home advantage should see him get plenty of chances against Dortmund, who need a win to keep their hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages alive. Back Van Persie to score anytime at 3/4.
Messi to score against Milan @ 7/10
The best player in the world continues to defy the records put in front of him and he looks like (and normally does) scoring every time he steps onto a football pitch. Despite AC Milan at the San Siro not being an easy proposition for Barcelona, Messi does not need a second invitation to score and his pace will really worry an ageing Milan backline. Amazingly, the Argentine has not scored in five previous clashes with Italian clubs, but records such as this cannot last forever. Expect Messi to add to his five Champions League goals already this season, especially with the carrot of winning Group H likely to spur Barcelona to victory.
Hulk to score against Shakhtar @ 7/5
Brazilian striker Hulk is now the main man at Porto and his goals will be key to how they adapt to the loss of Radamel Falcao and former boss Andre Villas-Boas. So far he has scored three goals in four Champions League matches this season, adding to his four domestic goals. Porto beat opponents Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 in the first meeting between the sides and that open affair will be repeated in the Ukraine, with both desperate for a win to boost their chances of making the last 16. The Brazilian, just like Van Persie and Messi, has the added attraction of being on penalties. And with Shakhtar conceding three in their opening two Champions League games at the Donbas Arena, back Hulk to take at least one of his chances.
