Former Los Blancos striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar returned to hand Real Madrid their first European home defeat in four years against Schalke, Cristiano Ronaldo became the Champions League’s top scorer and the game was a neutral’s favourite with seven goals.
However, from Manchester United fans’ perspective there was only one aspect of the match worth focussing on; the performance of young German upstart Leroy Sane for the visiting Royal Blues.
The 19-year-old was introduced far earlier than expected in Madrid, coming on for his Champions League debut as a 30th-minute substitute for the injured Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
Taking the field against the star-studded Champions League holders in their amphitheatre stadium could easily have withered the Essen native into a rabbit in headlights.
However, Sane took the opposite approach and used the adrenaline to turn in an eye-catching performance that sent Red Devils fans into rapture on social media.
His fleet-footed, fearless outing was topped with the goal of the game. A fierce curling shot flew beyond Iker Casillas from the right corner of the penalty area and left Red Devils supporters in little doubt that he should be pursued by Louis van Gaal this summer.
With only seven Bundesliga substitute appearances to his name to date, Sane is clearly still a raw talent in need of nurturing. Luckily, Van Gaal is known for his willingness to hand youngsters their first-team chance.
According to website transfermarkt.com, Sane is most comfortable playing in behind the strikers, where United are clearly well-stocked.
However, his showing from the right in Spain, where he added an assist for Huntelaar to his sublime strike, could tempt the Dutchman to explore him further.
Should the former Holland boss wish to add a source of goals from the wings then Sane certainly makes a case.
In his young career, in which he is yet to start a senior match, he already has two goals from eight appearances. Add in a 50 percent strike rate in his two outings for the German Under-19 side and it seems Sane certainly carries a knack for net-finding.
It would be remiss of the Red Devils to splash any cash on the former Bayer Leverkusen youth based purely on that Bernabeu outing, no matter how many tweets implore them to do so, but his confident display is certainly enough to pique their interest.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side are now 10/3 to retain the Champions League. New bwin.com customers can place their £30 signup bonus on Los Blancos and make £100 clear profit if they manage it.
