Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has been the first to admit in the lead-up to his side’s crucial Group A fixture with Villarreal that the Champions League is a much tougher proposition than the Premier League.
As such, City fans expecting their team to carry their domestic dominance onto the European stage this evening are likely to be left disappointed.
The Citizens might be odds-on at 3/5 to beat Villarreal at El Madrigal in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, but an easy victory is far from certain given their performances in their debut Champions League season.
While they have been sweeping everyone aside in the Premier League – City have scored 36 goals in securing nine wins and a draw in their ten league games so far – their Champions League record reads played three, won one, drawn one and lost one.
Their only win came two weeks ago at the Etihad Stadium against Villarreal, and this was fortuitously secured through a last-minute Sergio Aguero strike.
However, they still hold an advantage over the Yellow Submarine, who are performing poorly on both the domestic and European stage.
The Spanish side have failed to pick up a point in the Champions League so far this campaign, while a run of seven games without a win was only halted with a weekend victory over Rayo Vallecano.
As such, City certainly look the best bets in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, even though Villarreal are attractively priced at 9/2 for the win and a draw is at 11/4.
But with City unlikely to brush their opponents aside, a bet on a team to secure victory with a one-goal winning margin looks a good option at odds of 3/2.
A £25 free bet on the match to be decided by a one goal winning margin would return £62.50, with the free bet available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account.
Alternatively, punters could take advantage of the odds of 27/10 on Man City to win a match with under 2.5 combined goals, with a low-scoring affair probable given the two teams have only scored four goals between them in their European matches so far this season.
As for who is going to score, Mario Balotelli looks the best bet at odds of 6/5.
The Italian is available again after serving a European suspension and has scored five goals in his last four starts and six in his last six appearances for City.
