A 2-1 lead from the first leg and home advantage means Manchester City look set to knock out Europa League holders Porto and progress to the next round at the Etihad Stadium this evening.
The Citizens are odds-on at 1/20 to make it to the last 16, leaving the Portuguese side as 8/1 outsiders to win the tie and stay in the competition.
City are also odds-on to come out on top on the night at 57/100 in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, with the draw at 3/1 and an away success at 9/2.
The Citizens have won 16 of their 18 home matches this season; they are also unbeaten in 15 European home fixtures
Save for a 3-0 triumph against group whipping boys Villarreal at El Madrigal, City struggled away from home on their Champions League debut and early indications in Oporto last week were that they would also find it difficult on their Europa League travels.
Porto showed early on how different things would be if Andre Villas-Boas could get Chelsea playing as he wants them to, with their high pressing style restricting City’s effectiveness going forward and their incisive passing creating some promising openings.
However, City held firm and were by far the more dominant in the second half, where their superiority was rewarded with two goals which cancelled out Silvestre Varela’s 27th minute opener.
Crucially, they should be able to keep Porto on the back foot at the Etihad this evening given their strong home record and the Portuguese club’s lack of success in England.
The Citizens have won 16 of their 18 home matches this season; they are also unbeaten in 15 European home fixtures, with 12 wins and three draws coming since a 1-0 loss to FC Midtjylland in August 2008.
Porto, by way of contrast, have not won a competitive game in England in 14 attempts, with only two draws mixed in among 12 losses.
With Mancini planning to field a strong team the game certainly appears to be City’s to lose, although at odds of 57/100 for a home win it could prove prudent to combine a Citizens success with over 2.5 goals.
City have scored at least twice in 13 of their last 15 games at Eastlands and Porto managed at least one goal in all three of their Champions League away games earlier this season.
This suggests at least three goals in the game should be achieved without too much trouble.
At odds of 29/20 for Man City to beat Porto with over 2.5 goals, a successful £25 free bet on this outcome is set to return £61.25.
Meanwhile, City to notch up another two goals this evening is priced at 57/100, while over 2.5 goals on its own is available at 67/100.
