Robert Lewandowski has long been linked with a move to Manchester United but a host of top European clubs will surely now be vying for his signature this summer after his stunning four-goal salvo in Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League victory over Real Madrid.
The Polish hitman provided a masterclass in finishing on Tuesday night, scoring all the goals as Jurgen Klopp’s men recorded a highly impressive 4-1 semi-final first-leg triumph over the bewildered La Liga giants.
Prior to that remarkable result at the Westfalenstadion, Cristiano Ronaldo had appeared to be a shoo-in to finish as the competition’s leading scorer, having bagged 11 goals in Real’s run to the last four.
And although the Portuguese took his tally to 12 with Los Blancos’ consolation goal in Germany, Lewandowski’s four strikes have suddenly seen him become a genuine rival to top the goalscoring charts.
Ronaldo remains a strong 11/50 favourite (out from 1/20), but Lewandowski can now be backed at 3/1 (having been as long as 50/1 at the start of the week) to overhaul the £80 million man after moving to within two goals of him ahead of next week’s second leg at the Bernabeu.
In other words, new bwin customers backing Lewandowski to finish as Champions League top scorer with their free £20 bet would pocket winnings of if the Pole achieves the feat.
Further down the market, Lionel Messi, who has fired eight goals in this season’s competition, is available at 18/1to claim the award for the fifth straight season, although the Argentine genius looked short of fitness in Barcelona’s 4-0 defeat by Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
Thomas Muller bagged a brace in that emphatic win over the Catalans to move him on to seven goals for the campaign and the 23-year-old can be backed at 33/1 to finish at the top of the pile.
However, the momentum certainly appears to be with Lewandowksi, who, barring a real surprise at the Bernabeu, will have two more games to Ronaldo’s one to surpass the Real Madrid star’s tally.
