Portuguese giants Benfica are heavy favourites to beat Trabzonspor in the first leg of their Champions League third-round qualifying tie at the Estadio da Luz this evening.
The Lisbon-based club are 31/100 in bwin’s 3Way football betting market to beat their Turkish counterparts on the night and 1/4 to advance to the next round.
Meanwhile, a win for Trabzonspor is an attractive 17/2, with a draw at 15/4.
Putting a £25 free bet on Trabzonspor to win in the hope of recouping more than £200 is certainly tempting, and a case can be made for the Turkish side.
The claret and blues finished level on points with champions Fenerbahce in the 2010-11 Turkish Super Lig, only narrowly missing out on automatic Champions League qualification.
This was despite winning five of their last six league matches and having the best away record in the league, with 13 wins in 17 matches and more than two goals scored a game.
With this in mind, a wager on Trabzonspor to beat Benfica at odds of 25/4, with the stake returned if the match ends in a draw, looks like a good bet.
However, this ignores the fact that Benfica have significant pedigree at European level.
The two-time European Cup winners might have been knocked out of the group stage of last year’s Champions League, but they went on to reach the semi-finals of the Europa League.
Meanwhile, Trabzonspor were knocked out in the first round of last season’s Europa League by an under-strength Liverpool side.
As such, Benfica are likely to have too much for Trabzonspor this evening, and with home games involving Benfica in the Portuguese Liga last season featuring more than 2.5 goals in ten out of 15 cases, they could win in style.
At odds of 83/100, a successful £25 free bet on there to be at least three goals in the match, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £45.75.
