Championship betting tips 2018/19: Lampard can inspire Rams to promotion

Derby are a tasty 14/1 to win the title in our Championship betting tips in Frank Lampard’s first season as a manager.

The former Chelsea and England midfielder has opted to take the plunge into management with the Rams, replacing Gary Rowett who headed to Stoke.

Despite initial concerns over Financial Fair Play, Lampard has already made his mark in the transfer market.

The 40-year-old has added the signings of highly-rated youngsters Harry Wilson and Mason Mount, from Liverpool and Chelsea respectively, to an already-experienced squad that lost in the semi-finals of the play-offs last season under Rowett.

Lampard said: “I’m delighted to get both of these deals done and add players of their quality and calibre to the squad.”

A quote of 5/1 for the Rams to be promoted certainly catches our eye.

Rowett has been charged with the task of guiding Stoke back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The Potters are 5/1 favourites to win the title despite the threat of their star players leaving, with 2/1 on offer for them to be promoted.

Playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri has already departed for Liverpool while England goalkeeper Jack Butland is expected to be sought-after, but the club have surprisingly kept hold of key midfielder Joe Allen.

Rowett is set to have more money to spend and Stoke look destined for a successful season following relegation from the Premier League under Paul Lambert last term.

Championship promotion betting

Nottingham Forest have made a huge statement of intent with their recruitment this summer under Aitor Karanka.

Karanka took over at the City Ground in January, replacing Mark Warburton, and steered the club away from the threat of relegation to a 17th-placed finish.

And the former Middlesbrough boss has signed high-calibre players this summer to suggest Forest should be challenging for promotion.

They are 4/1 to return to the Premier League following a 20-year absence, after attracting the likes of Michael Dawson, Lewis Grabban and Joao Carvalho to the club.

Grabban will add significant strike power following his 20-goal haul during loan spells at Sunderland and Aston Villa last season.

Karanka knows how to get to the Premier League from his time with Boro and Forest could well go up this term.

Karanka’s former employers Middlesbrough are 3/1 to head back to the top-flight after their quest for an immediate return last season under Tony Pulis ended in the play-offs.

Pulis has brought in Aden Flint and Paddy McNair to compliment an already expensive group of players who should be better prepared to challenge this time around.

Darren Moore is 5/2 to lead West Brom back to the big time while Sheffield Wednesday, at 7/1, could be an outside bet following their poor showing last campaign.

Championship relegation betting

Rotherham are 11/10 favourites to drop into League One for the second time in three years.

The Millers do not have happy memories of their last season in the second tier after they went down with a record low points total.

Paul Warne has brought a feelgood factor back to New York Stadium, culminating in victory over Shrewsbury in the play-off final in May, but they are unlikely to be able to compete financially.

Bolton are second favourites for the drop, priced at 5/4, yet Phil Parkinson has brought in some shrewd signings in an attempt to avoid any more final-day drama this season.

The Wanderers survived by the skin of their teeth and have brought in Erhun Oztumer, Clayton Donaldson and Yanic Wildschut.

Ipswich could find the going tough this campaign after replacing Mick McCarthy with former Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst.

The Tractor Boys have also sold Adam Webster to Bristol City and only recruited Chelsea youngster Trevoh Chalobah, as well as Jordan Roberts and Gwion Edwards from lower-league clubs.

Ipswich are set to be looking down rather than up this term and are 11/4 to be relegated.

Hull have lost plenty of experienced players such as David Meyler, Allan McGregor, Abel Hernandez, Michael Dawson and Seb Larsson and are 4/1 to drop down to League One, the same price as QPR and Reading.
