Liverpool vs Atalanta: Reds to overcome injuries

Kick-off: 2000, 25/11/2020

Stadium: Anfield

Liverpool’s injury problems mean Jurgen Klopp will be keen to seize the chance to qualify for the last 16 with two matches to spare.

The Anfield treatment room is a busy place at the moment and victory against Atalanta would at least ease the pressure ahead of the final two group games in December.

The Italians only seem to know one way of playing, though, so an open game is expected, making a Reds win and over 2.5 goals an enticing prospect at evens for our first Liverpool vs Atalanta prediction.

A Look At Liverpool’s Betting Odds

Klopp will be hoping for some good news on the fitness of midfielders Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson after being struck down by yet more injury problems.

The defending Premier League champions underlined their enduring quality and will to win with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Leicester – setting a new club record of 64 unbeaten league matches at home – despite missing 10 members of his first-team squad on Sunday.

But just as Klopp got Fabinho back from a three-week lay-off with a hamstring problem to play as an emergency centre-back, he lost fellow midfielder Naby Keita to a similar injury.

And midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri did not even make the squad after it was discovered he had returned from international duty with yet another muscle problem.

Klopp will hope either or both of Henderson and Thiago can be available while Mohamed Salah is likely to return to the squad after a negative Covid-19 test.

In his absence, summer signing Diogo Jota continued his hot streak as his goal against Leicester made it seven in his last six club appearances, becoming the first Liverpool player to score in his first four home top-flight appearances.

Jota’s goal put Liverpool 2-0 up at the break on Sunday and they have scored in the first half in eight of their last nine matches.

Four of the last five goals they have conceded have also come in the first half so both teams to score before the break is an interesting option at Liverpool vs Atalanta odds.

A Look At Atalanta’s Betting Odds

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini refused to change his team’s attacking approach when the teams met earlier this month but it backfired as Diogo Jota’s hat-trick helped Liverpool to a 5-0 win.

Gasperini admitted his players “struggled with the pace of the game” but they still created plenty of chances.

Klopp said after the match: “We scored five goals and could have scored two or three more but Alisson had to make three world-class saves as well so you see how big the threat is when you let them do what they are good at.”

Atalanta were held to a goalless draw at Spezia on Saturday but created plenty of chances once more, including one shot hitting the post while Robin Gosens had a goal ruled out for offside by VAR.

With the potential for an open match and plenty of goals, a home win and both teams to score at 3/2 looks another solid pick as our final Liverpool vs Atalanta prediction.
